About the SBB (Specialist in Blood Bank) Program

The Specialist in Blood Bank (SBB) Program is an advanced, professional training pathway designed to prepare individuals for leadership and expert roles in blood banking and transfusion medicine. Through a combination of coursework, clinical experience, and practical laboratory training, participants gain in-depth knowledge and hands-on skills in areas such as donor testing, blood component preparation, immunohematology, compatibility testing, quality systems, and overall blood center operations. Graduates of the program earn a certificate of completion and are eligible to sit for the Specialist in Blood Banking certification exam offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), a nationally recognized credential that signifies advanced competence in the field.

Completion of an SBB program equips professionals to function effectively in hospital transfusion services, community blood centers, reference laboratories, and related healthcare settings — often moving into supervisory, educational, quality assurance, or technical specialist roles — while contributing to the safe collection, testing, and distribution of blood products that save lives every day.
