Blood donors needed to replenish supply
November 7, 2017
Blood Assurance is in need of donations, specifically O negative blood type.
O negative is known as the universal donor because every other blood type can accept that blood type.
Blood Assurance Donor Coordinator Trudy Cody said blood collected in the Upper Cumberland stays at our local hospitals.
"Winter is especially important for donors," Cody said. "Some people can't get out to donate, accidents tend to be worse with the weather."
Cody said blood is needed every day, from trauma accidents to surgeries, treatment for terminal illnesses and even premature babies.
"One unit takes about 30 minutes to donate and saves three lives," Cody said.
If you're planning to give blood, Cody recommends drinking plenty of water, avoiding caffeine and eat a meal rich in iron before you donate.
The Blood Assurance Donor Center on Broad Street is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Blood drives are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Nov. 13, at Tennessee Tech; from 1-6 p.m., Nov. 22, at Life Church of Cookeville; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Nov. 27 at American Bank & Trust.
